In Louisville on June 26 the Democratic state convention reopened and remained far from resolving the three cornered fight for the governor nomination. An opening clash over police presence delayed ballots, with delegates insisting ballots not be taken until police were removed. After lunch, the vote was finally scheduled to proceed, though no resolution emerged.
London June 24 Sir Thomas Lipton’s Shamrock yacht was launched at 3 PM with Lady Russell christening and champagne. The ceremony ended with cheers and speeches. A barge collided with the bow as Shamrock reached mid stream, causing a dent, damage extent not yet known.
Otis dispatches a long cable in reply to the war department's inquiry. He notes limited campaigning due to the rainy season, a scattered insurgent army, and a populace seeking peace and American protection. Civilians no longer flee unless forced, towns not recently burned, insurgent quarrels continue, Luzon quiet awaiting results, and U S troops pressed to the limit.
Paris June 26 Special. Cabinet members appeared before the chamber of deputies and urged Republicans to unite for pacification. They called for respect and silence while judicial decisions are prepared and asked for a truce of irritating discussions. The statement and order of the day passed the senate by a small majority and were approved by the cabinet nearly unanimously.
Fire at Michigan Central freight house and freight office this afternoon quickly leveled the buildings. Flames spread to the Cincinnati Hamilton and Dayton yard, destroying about a hundred loaded freight cars. The fire department is battling the blaze with losses already set at $500,000.
In Caicaco on June 26 a three hundred strong group of hog killers joined stock yards strikers. Union leaders say the strike will widen to skilled workers by July 1 if packers do not concede, threatening a regional industry tie-up. The packers held a conference and massed in the nearby area.
The Tin Plate Company conferences committee and tin workers in Chicago failed to reach an agreement at Pirrspena Pennsylvania convention indicating a 40,000 worker strike to begin Saturday.
New York June 26 In criminal court Mrs George B Barrow pleaded guilty to kidnapping Baby Marion Clarke. She received a sentence of twelve years and one month in prison.
Sprinakeep July 26 Special Governor Tanner issues a proclamation revoking the prior martial law order at Pana and announces that the situation is fully restored and normal.
