The Republican state convention reconvened this morning in Columbus with a 6000 seat auditorium filled beyond capacity amid loud demonstrations. The platform reaffirms the St. Louis principles, endorses McKinley, and promises general prosperity. It also notes that islanders will wage guerrilla warfare requiring a large force to subdue, praising volunteers whose deeds will adorn history.
Special report from Louisville details William Jennings Bryan arriving from Mammoth Cave to a tremendous depot crowd. Mounted police and three brass bands escorted him to the hotel as supporters including J. P. Altgeld and Geo. F. Williams greeted the Silver Apostle and bimetallic organizations.
A state political convention backed enforceme nt of anti trust measures and lynching protests. Nominations for governor opened with H M Daugherty Judge C K Nash and Judge L W Hull. Nash won on the second ballot after Hamilton county delivered 86 votes, and the nomination was made unanimous. Nash, a Columbus attorney, has served as attorney general, supreme court member, and four times as state committee chairman.
The Illinois National Guard annual encampment dates are amended. Third Infantry now camps August 12, Fifth August 19, Eighth August 26, replacing prior dates. Naval militia will assemble in Chicago on August 5.
Edward Sanford, president of the Monitor Cycle club of Brooklyn, dropped dead trying to ride a 91 gear in strong wind. The Chicago Chronicle notes many wheelmen chase high gears, warning that gears above 80 are dangerous, especially for women with drop-frame bikes. Bicycling should be healthy when not abused.
The Freeport to Milwaukee passenger train on the North Western road aims to please the public. Officers boast high comfort and speed, benefiting travelers between Freeport Rockford Milwaukee and nearby points. A Bicycle Club meeting is called for Y M C A members this evening at association rooms.

General King, returning to the United States from Manila due to ill health, declares the situation in the Philippines is most serious. He notes the war is by no means over and stresses ongoing challenges for American forces and local authorities. His remarks arrive in San Francisco dated June 2.
The cabinet meeting today decided not to press for the necessity of enlisting volunteers. No active call for citizens to join the military effort was made.
