Decoration Day events drew large crowds in New York as the president reviewed a parade and visited Grant’s tomb. Speeches by Gen. Logan honored fallen soldiers amid naval salutes, with ceremonies across New Orleans, Charleston, Cincinnati, Chicago, and many other cities marking the nation’s reverence for those who died.
At the Old Commander’s Tomb Riverside becomes a patriotic scene as thousands gather at dawn to honor General Grant. Flowers from many states and nations adorn the tomb with immortelles carnations and green ivy. A grand display including a Chinese tribute marks the international reverence for America’s military leader.
