Troops from Columbus Newark and Chillicothe reinforce city guards as a Brooklyn streetcar strike widens. Clergy leaders urge restraint while Mayor Farley weighs arming nonunion workers. Strikes spread to clothing, freight handlers, and newsboys as the Pennsylvania yards plan more walkouts.
Mayor Farley uses old law to assert police control in South Brooklyn as clashes erupt between soldiers and alleged strikers. Militia patrols at Clay and Pearl Streets, several arrests, and heightened tension as Farley swears in Cleveland units to back police efforts against non union workers.
District Master James Pines of Knights of Labor Assembly No 75 outlined a plan in Brooklyn to pressure the street car company amid the ongoing strike. He stated that organized action would intensify to secure demands, signaling potential escalation in labor tactics.
Evansville Indiana July 26 twelve or more union miners to be arrested today and brought before Acting Circuit Judge Hawkins on the charge of violating a recently issued injunction. Demonstrations at the John Ingle coal mine included wives and children with cans and horns while armed colored miners faced a crowd. Police dispersed the mob as operator Ingle and attorney Posey left the scene. Strikers plan to arm themselves with Winchesters and parade streets with weapons.
More than 500 members gathered at Grand Opera House as State Secretary-Treasurer W. D. Ryan admitted signing an agreement with coal operators and the board before evidence in June. He claimed the move aimed to secure the discharge of African American workers. The group split over his motives and declined both reopening offers, planning to present a counter proposition to the company.
William Smith, a Caruterville striker leader, was held in 1000 dollar bonds in the U S district court for violating Judge Allen’s injunction restraining interference with the St Louis and Big Muddy Coal Company mine. He posted bond and was returned to Marion to face a murder charge arising from a shooting on a train bound for Brush’s mine that killed one man and injured twenty others.
President John F. Tobin of the Boot and Shoe Workers' International union stated after a conference with Frank C. Waycross Georgia July 26 Mrs M J Mock, her son Joe Mock and Cora Smith an orphan girl, were drowned while bathing at Ball's Bluff on the Satilla river.
San Francisco dispatch reports Mrs H W Bens of Clay City Kentucky survived a voyage from Port Townsend to Kotzebue by scurvy while seventeen aboard the Bens expedition perished. She cared for her dying husband twelve weeks before he died, then walked nine miles to a cabin, was aided by three fishermen, and later reached St Michael aboard the Bertha with nearly one million dollars in gold aboard. The Elk party buried on a small island after dying of scurvy include Captain Smith First Mate Frank Johnson Earl Plummer John Morrison Peter Johnson James Hutton E Cowder Captain Hibbard and six Eckert crew members.
Mrs Bens recounted a harrowing voyage to Alaska where gold fever led her husband to peril. From Seattle in 1897 they searched up the Selewick and Tagragawick rivers, endured storms and months of scurvy, and Mr Bens died after sixty hours without food. Three fishermen buried him by a crude bier. The coastline faces growing destitution as Dawson rush and Nome reports vary.
Three victims of the Kotzebue mining bubble arrived from St. Michael aboard the Cortneyford. A. R. Kalweit, John A. Koehler, and FP. W. Babbitt recounted hardships and privations of the gold search, saying at least 100 lives were sacrificed and many others spent their last dollar without profit. They prospected Kotzebue sound and Kowak river, finding little beyond a few colors.
John Siefert a 30 year old longshoreman was found upright in the river in Green Bay Wisconsin. Authorities suspect foul play though there are no marks on the body. Siefert had testified against David Vincent who is held for trial on a charge of killing Charles Otto.
A local horse buyer C J McMurry reports strong relief from kidney trouble after using Doan's Kidney pills. He describes severe nocturnal urination and back pain improving quickly after starting the remedy, and recommends the product from Emmert & Burrells. Newark has 32207 buildings with 65748 families 7091 stores and 1793 manufacturers. Also notes felled salmon stocks in England and Scotland. An ad quotes Foley’s Kidney Cure as life saving. Chicago Penny Savings Society notes over 70000 raised by schoolchildren aiding savings.
W B Conlin of Bowersville Ohio touts Foley s Kidney Cure after months of doctor visits. H J Moogh W F Jungkunz Co claim strawberries act as a beautifying tonic. Skin specialists recommend daily servings at breakfast and lunch noting iron content and nerves aid.
An ad touts Allen's Foot-Base powder to ease tight new shoes and relieve coins and bunions, claiming instant comfort and curing ingrown nails, sweating, and hot aching feet. Available at druggists and shoe stores for 25c, trial package free by mail from Le Roy New York. Sultan the Newfoundland dog famed in France for heroism, awarded a collar by the Society for the Protection of Animals after thwarting crime and rescuing a child, later said to have been poisoned during a robbery attempt.
A claim promotes Foley's Kidney Cure as guaranteed to repair kidney disorders. The passage also cites English literacy among prisoners, stating 148,962 convicts with only 8,324 able to read well, 72 with superior education, 80,871 illiterate, and 115,087 with limited reading ability.

A Washington report says President McKinley may move Pension Commissioner H. Clay Evans before the G A R encampment in September to ease discontent with his administration. Critics claim Evans is too rigid in demanding evidence, and a congressional committee's findings are not expected to fully exonerate him.
