In a midnight fog off Shelter Cove California the steamers Columbia and San Pedro collided. The 300 foot Columbia sank after a ten foot bow breach, loosing 100 plus lives and many women among the dead. Survivors describe a rapid catastrophe as people slept and the wreckage poured in.
