The First Presbyterian Sunday school annual picnic is set for Oakdale park on Wednesday July 19. Sunday school teachers meet tonight after prayer meeting to arrange details.
A patrol from the Fourth Cavalry aboard the gunboat Napidan clashed with about 500 insurgents at Laguna de Bay. Two cavalrymen were wounded, ten insurgents were killed, and the enemy losses were estimated at 35. Rebels were reported at Mantilupa on the south shore as Napidan shelled entrenchments and American forces briefly landed. The action followed by the coast.

H J Lang a clerk in F A Reads dry goods store received a telegram from Manchester Iowa reporting the death of his brother. The young man, married a year, was sunstruck yesterday and died. Lang went to Manchester to attend the funeral.

William H. Peak famed Swiss bell ringer and harpist died in Belvidere Illinois, aged 68. He first performed publicly at seven, predated Dan Rice, and led a quartet that promoted temperance with John B Gough across New England and then nationwide. He leaves a wife and two sons Lute of Dowagiac and Frank H. of Chicago.

A steamship named Paris entered the tidal harbor today and, driven by wind and tide, became unmanageable. The stern swung, hitting the pier end where a large crowd gathered. The pier shook, spectators panicked, and a rush to flee ensued before the ship was brought under control and anchored safely.
Lexington July 13 Taylor was unanimously nominated for governor by the Republican state convention after the platform report was adopted. Captain Platt Judge Stone and other candidates withdrew before the roll call for nomination.

The Flower Mission of the WCTU asks for flower donations this Friday afternoon at Mrs Wolf’s 310 Stephenson street. The WCTU will meet Friday at 2 PM at Mrs Wolf’s with Mrs Bell. A Bible reading by Miss Vought will be part of the devotional exercises.
A. D. Cox is sick. Dr. Fair's young son Donald, long ill, is improving. George Goff of Float street stepped on a rusty nail yesterday and now has a very sore foot under Dr. Fair care. Fred Stonick, stricken with paralysis yesterday, is better today and is expected to survive the shock though may not regain use of his limbs under Dr. Stealy care.
