Croquet in New York clubs and a 1000 mile relay
The New York croquet scene remains active with three clubs in Central Park and Brooklyn. A social rivalry exists between the Union and New York clubs, whose members are mostly older and affluent. A 1000 mile relay from New York to Chicago will start at City Hall, with 2000 youths, ages 15 to 18, carrying a silver message tube for Mayor McClellan to Mayor Busse, running about half a mile per leg over five days with night runs and an accompanying automobile. Diamond Jim Brady, famed as Broadway’s first-nighter, faces an impersonation on a roof garden stage. Brady, a railroad contractor and car builder, wears vast diamonds and owns a large racing stable and a vast wardrobe. Apple Jane, a long-standing immigrant landmark, regains her Custom House stand after political maneuvering, earning the nickname first lady of the land.
