Havana Celebrates Fourth of July with Parades and Banquet

Havana bursts with noise as Cubans and Americans mark the day. Firecrackers wooed by Cuban youngsters. a band, 300 American flags, and long parade crowds drew cheers. A 45 gun salute rang from Cabanas fortress as the Eighth Infantry marched. An evening banquet at the Tacon theater featured General Brooke, General Chaffee, and others.

No Negroes At Pana Causes Tense Departure

In Pana Illinois July 5 a group of black miners who left Brush mines near Carterville were intercepted near Union station by a crowd of about twenty and told to leave town. The delegation agreed to depart if union miners provided transport. They were marched to the city limits and urged away. A local barber John Hicklin who opposed union miners reported his home was surrounded and he and his family ordered to leave. Hicklins, longtime residents, left with family. Several white non union miners received notices to depart but planned to stay.

Jones to resign as Democratic chairman

Ex representative Asher G. Carruth said the Democratic national committee has been called to accept Senator Jones’s resignation and to elect a successor. Carruth mentioned Benjamin Cable as a preferred option, but expected William J. Stone to become chairman, noting Jones is a sick man.

Tombstone Inscription From Arkansas Frontier Scout

A Missouri traveler found an inscription in a Washington county Arkansas cemetery. It records Alfred W. Caughman born Izard County January 23 1826 died March 28 1875. The epitaph notes he killed over 100 deer in his early days and that he was born and raised a frontiersman's son who ultimately gave up his life and his gun.
