Garretson's brigade with Sixth Illinois Eighth Ohio and Sixth Massachusetts is ordered to Santiago from Camp Alger. Units from Freeport Galena Sterling and other northern Illinois towns prepare to march to Ringgold Ga then Charleston and finally to Santiago under Major General Wilson who commands the detachment.
Cuapatanocna July 5 Special. The order to send six regiments including the Third Illinois to join Shafter at Santiago has been rescinded because the Spanish fleet was destroyed.

Davenport Iowa July 5 Special D W Richardson editor of Davenport Democrat died at Groton Vict last night.
