From Santiago July 1 the San Juan Heights fell after a hard fought assault. American troops stormed the fortifications, Caney fell, and the village was taken as heavy losses were borne by both sides. Spanish ships shelled the attackers but could not halt the advance. The victory opened the path toward Morro Castle.
A Madrid special says Camara's torpedo boat destroyers will return from Port Said to Spain. Lloyds at Port Said reports the Spanish warship Prosperina has sailed. A Cairo consular report notes two Camara squadron vessels have entered the Suez Canal.
Berury July 2 Special A correspondent for the Associated Press reports Germany, France and Russia have reached an understanding to intervene in the Philippines when hostilities end to prevent the United States or Great Britain from gaining possession of the entire islands.
A Cuban informer near Manzanillo says 8,000 Spanish troops who left June 23 to march on Santiago were recalled by Gen. Pando after reaching Bayamo. Pando is in Havana relieving the army. Food is scarce and roads are nearly impassable, hindering aid to the Santiago garrison. Also noted: colonial ships Colon and Covadonga arriving at the canal, and Lloyd's reports the Spanish fleet coaling outside Egyptian waters at Port Said.
A man identifying as Charles Von Arnold claims imprisonment in London on fraud charges. He says he was convicted in Stephenson County Michigan for forgery and similar offenses and asks the county clerk to deny the accusations to London authorities. A Dallas special reports six robbers stopped the west bound express near Stanton between the Colorado and Pecos rivers. They blew the express car safe and escaped on horseback to the southwest. Officials say the amount taken is undisclosed though estimates range from ten to fifty thousand dollars.
