Destruction Rakes Through Center City Fire in Philadelphia

A blaze began in a Market Street cellar at 6:60 yesterday and swept a large block, threatening City Hall and Wanamaker’s store. The Wanamaker tower was destroyed with clocks and chimes, while losses range from 1 million to 2.5 million, largely insured. The blaze destroyed 30 buildings, with listed losses to Hanscom Bros., Hirsch Bros., Sterner cigars, and others along Market Street and nearby Thirteenth and Filbert streets.

Excitement Costs One Site Fireman Hurt and More

A carpet firm employee collapsed dead from excitement as fire raged through Market street, while James Furlong of Juniper and Filbert streets tumbled toward pneumonia and was moved to a hotel. William Gorman, assistant foreman at company No. 1, was injured by falling bricks. The blaze disrupted business districts, trapping thousands outside Wanamaker’s and other stores, with streets cordoned off for hours. Fort Smith tragedy reports two men killed in a fire there yesterday morning, I. M. Pray and another traveling salesman.

Fremont man recounts New Windsor hotel blaze escape

J A Mullison of Fremont Nebraska describes a hall lamp explosion on the second floor of the New Windsor hotel that ignited a fire. In the panic, those of the prests who attempted theft escaped by moving through fire and smoke and groping along hallways to the stairs.

Nine Firemen and Two Spectators Hurt in Monroe Street Blaze

A massive fire destroyed the Williams block at 196 to 202 Monroe street, injuring seven firemen and two spectators. Firemen battled the flames after a basement fire spread rapidly, with several victims badly damaged and buildings suffering extensive losses totaling about 336000. Major losers include Murzburger Bros and Grossman & Michalson among others.

Hotel blaze tears through Logansport in freezing night

A gas explosion at the Murdock hotel in Logansport Indiana triggered the city’s most destructive fire. The blaze gutted the hotel and spread to Elliott’s wholesale grocery and surrounding buildings. Firemen worked two hours to control the flames as cold weather with low water pressure hampered efforts. Loss estimates ranged from 75 000 to 100 000.

Swindling Allegations Hit Real Estate Broker Hackett

Omaha reports Charles Hackett a real estate broker arrested by the Mostyn Detective agency on a swindle charge. He planned a Ogden Utah bank scheme with partner Charles Blazier, a noted swindler jailed in Utah. Hackett previously ran in Denver in 1892.

In Cleveland and Canton reports Perry Heath of Muncie Ind met with Hanna amid rising sentiment Governor Bushnell may name Hanna to succeed Sherman.
