Washington Jan 23 Senate records a sensational session with Senor Rodriguez of the Greater Republic of Central America sending a critical note to Secretary Olney on the Nicaragua canal bill. Morgan denounces the document as a threat and accuses Britain of aims to control the isthmus, while Turpie challenges Cuba policy rumors. Rodriguez warns the contract and transfer rules could nullify Nicaragua’s rights and end the canal concession if Congress changes terms.
In a Senate speech Senator Morgan denounces a letter from Minister Rodriguez as an impertinent intrusion. He warns that Britain uses the diet as a catspaw and insists the response precedes any ratification of a new arbitration treaty. He links the letter to a proposed Frelinghuysen Lavalla payoff to Nicaragua and the canal dispute.
In Washington on private bill day the House passed over the presidents veto a measure to hold terms of the eastern district of Texas at Beaumont by 144 to 68. Cooper of Texas argued the veto was based on a misapprehension and faulted access to Cleveland. Grosvenor mocked White House access rules and said constituents deserve direct contact with their representatives. Also reported, $3,600 in a registered mail sack from San Francisco was missing in Denver.
J P Utley of Mt Vernon Indiana, a 64 year old Posey County farmer, recounts years of stomach trouble and liver abscess.
