Hanna Indorsed for Sherman Seat by Canton Foraker Club

Canton Ohio Jan 21 The Thirty second Ward Foraker club of Cleveland endorses M A Hanna for the United States senate to fill the unexpired Sherman term. A copy of the resolutions was sent to Governor Bushnell urging appointment. Hanna declined to discuss the senatorial topic, saying he wished to see Major McKinley first.

Mason's Nomination Confirmed as Senator

In Springfield on January 21 the legislature completed the process to seat William E. Mason as United States senator. Mason led in the joint vote 125 to 77 over Altgeld. Mason pledged protection, lower prices from trusts, honest money, and a revised Monroe doctrine for Cuban belligerency. Resolutions praised Senator Cullom for a cabinet post. various bills were introduced in the Senate and House.

Delaware rump legislature adjourns with manifesto

The rump Delaware legislature adjourned sine die after issuing a manifesto accusing officials of denying rights, overthrowing elected representatives, falsifying returns, and corrupting state authority. The document also condemns courts as partisan. In Denver, Henry M. Teller arrived after re election and criticized Secretary of State pick Sherman as lacking foreign affairs knowledge.

Populist caucus nominates Harris for U S senator on ballot

Topeka Kansas reports William A Harris of Linwood won nomination for United States senator in the Populist caucus on the thirty-fifth ballot. Harris, 54, a Virginia native, moved to Kansas in 1865 and was a Democrat until 1890. For twenty years he has been a farmer.

Lauterbachs Visit Canton New York Discuss Cabinet

Edward Lauterbach returned to New York after a Canton meeting with President elect McKinley. He spoke as a representative of the regular New York Republican organization about New York’s role in the cabinet, suggesting Fassett Payne and Woodford for posts and noting no local offices were paid for.

Genuine Witchcraft Scare Hits Richfield Center Village

Toledo reports a German village Richfield Center faces a witchcraft scare with seventeen families afflicted by a mysterious illness. Sixty to seventy people near death, including A. M. Miller and his family, suffer sleeplessness and emaciation as residents blame a satanic influence and even black cats. Livestock also affected as horses go mad and cattle waste away. Feather bed fears persist though physicians are baffled.
