In Washington on January 20 the cabinet discussed Samoa. no action expected beyond proposing a conference among ambassadors of three powers with concurrent jurisdiction. The House passed the post office appropriation bill after striking out “newly acquired territory” from Cuba, Porto Rico, and the Philippines provisions. The Senate debated naval academy cadet Oscar W. Deignan’s appointment and heard arguments on the Philippines and the Nicaragua canal. The hospital ship Relief was ordered to Manila via Suez.
In North Dakota Biswarox January 20 reports the Republican senatorial caucus nominated J. P. McCumber as candidate for United States senator and he will be elected on joint ballot at noon. Delaware reports the fifth ballot for senator yielded no choice. Nebraska notes Hayward gained four votes on the fourth ballot, reaching forty, a majority of the Republican caucus if one is called.
In Sycamore Illinois Jan 19 the First Congregational Church faces dissention. Pastor Rev Geo Rexford considered resigning for Telluride Colorado but will stay after a meeting. A choir tenor was forced to resign for reading a paper during the sermon as town supporters seek a church court. A Knights of Pythias group in Hot Springs Arkansas considers establishing a national sanitarium there following site investigations.
January 20 forecast for Ortoano warns of threatening weather with possible showers this afternoon or tonight. Saturday will be partly cloudy with brisk southerly winds.

Life in Lena reports the deaths of Gilbert L. Howard born 1822 in New York and Robert Ferguson born 1822 in Summit County Ohio after long illnesses. Howard’s funeral is set for 10 am from the Louisa church with Rev. Gilbert. Ferguson’s service will be at 10 am Saturday at his home before burial in Winslow. Newcomer Newcome Howard attends. Also noted are illnesses of Peter Best and Mrs. Margaret Kemper with others visiting Lena friends.
The Sick List notes John Backus and Dr. E. H. Allen ill, Emmeretta Henderson ailing, Chas. Brandt’s two sons sick, and Fred Dorman still quite ill with the grip. Will Hansen was able to come home from the hospital today.

County Superintendent Burton will attend a teachers institute in Orangeville tomorrow. Bergman and Dorman report a carload of Hickory farm wagons. Henry Sheldon of Chicago presents a Nicaragua canal report to the Freeport Public Library for public consultation. Pembroke Hive Ladies of Maccabees mark their third anniversary tomorrow evening at their hall above State Bank. Only members and families invited. An item on Mr and Mrs George Groff’s party noted guests played cards, later corrected as false. Schvelfel and Brockhausen advertise several bargains for Freeport citizens. In Pecatonica on January 19 an operation was performed on Mrs Benedict for gall stones. Doctors Ives and Caldwell of Freeport led the case. Mrs Benedict has been very ill for weeks. Surgeons expect to leave the body side open for about a month.
