Jefferson City Mo Jan 17 The senate investigating committee delivering a pivotal report says Niedringhaus did not contribute the $21000 as credited but the amount was reduced by a payment from Anheuser Busch Brewing and Adolphus Kusch later to be refunded if Niedringhaus could recover it from the national GOP committee The panel finds Niedringhaus did not fully disclose political expenses and sees no direct evidence that Adolphus Busch or Otto Stifel aimed to influence legislation The committee requests more time to investigate use of federal patronage in the senatorial race.
Jefferson City Jan 17 Thom ap If Niedringhaus with wife and brother Alex arrived from St Louis denying any bribery proposition from the postmaster. He said he knew nothing of any proposition connected to the bribery tale and offered no corroboration of the allegation.
The sixteenth annual national convention of the United Mine Workers of America opened with President Mitchell presiding. Nearly 600 delegates from all districts attended as reports showed work shortages and possible crises with contracts and awards looming in April 1906. Treasurer Wilson reported a treasury balance of $608,952.32 after income of $851,772.86 and expenditures of $1,654,011.22 for the year ending Nov. 30, 1904.
Wichita Kan Jan 17 One man was killed and thirteen injured in a Santa Fe passenger train wreck north of Derby. The dead man is I J West express messenger Newton Kan Charles Shafer express messenger Oklahoma City OK and John Stevens Neodesha Kan will probably die.
A fire in the Cook County Court House yesterday caused heavy damage on the fourth and third floors. Painter Thomius Edwards was fatally burned and Oscar Enbolm suffered serious injuries as flames swept from a temporary paint room toward the attic. Firefighters contained the blaze within a half hour, preventing panic among court staff and visitors. Estimated loss runs around fifty nine thousand dollars with structural damage to stone copings and walls at Clark and Washington.
Mrs. Lou Scaggs was arrested on a federal warrant in Sullivan Al charged with selling three barrels of whisky without a license. The Scaggs family recently moved from Henderson Wy and took four barrels traded for a cottage. Her husband allegedly sold three more barrels with her knowledge before fleeing. The Newmann Tag and Order League is pressing anti intoxicanant efforts and federal warrants have been issued against several offenders.
