Russians pursued to Lieurnpnt. Two thousand Russian cavalry attacked Newchwang. Japanese withdrew, then counterattacked with reinforcements. Russians also attacked Niuchiatun but were repulsed.

A major blaze at the Corn Products company's Oswaco plant's main factory building threatens total destruction. The loss is feared heavy with several workers burned to varying degrees. Firefighters battle the flames as flames spread and the plant braces for a complete loss.
Washington Jan 13 The comptroller of currency issued a call for reports on the condition of national banks at the close of business on Jan 1. The notice requires banks to submit detailed statements covering assets liabilities and capital and asks for any changes since the prior report. Mrs. Jacob Gressley slipped on a slippery sidewalk from Stephen son street to the alley at the rear Fry's block this afternoon. She fell while carrying a basket and a bundle, fracturing her thigh bone. She was taken to the office of Drs Stealy and Snyter where the fracture was set.

Mrs George Schinig a city resident for fifty one years died at St Francis hospital after an operation for bowel obstruction conducted as relief from years of illness. She was born Otellia Kohler in Baden Germany December 16 1832 and came to America at age eleven. She was the widow of George Schinig pioneer boot and shoe merchant at 37 South Galena avenue and leaves two children two brothers and one sister. Funeral arrangements not yet made. Infant Paul Lawrence Heck dies at four and a half months after whooping cough. Services set for 1:30 pm at home and 2 pm at St Joseph's Church.
A six te en year old boy named Charlie Tegeler ran away to seek freedom and work. He claims he rode an Illinois Central freight west to find a job at an organ factory then went to Warren Dubuque and finally returned home via Galena aided by a friendly conductor. Police doubt his stated purpose but confirm his safe return and broadened experience.
