Rome January 11 Pontiff releases encyclical text addressing French Catholics comfort in suffering and unity amid war. He says the French government declaration of war opposes Christian faith and all spiritual ideas, but French Catholics may expect trials with ultimate victory assured.
The Ponce was towed into Hamilton Bermuda after going missing and being found disabled. A cablegram from Bermuda confirmed its arrival. In New York the Maracas from Trinidad arrived, after delays caused by machinery disorder.
In Wilmington Illinois on January 11 two men were killed and about a dozen injured when a gas plant in Woodman hall exploded during a card party. The two men, killed instantly, had entered a rear room to stop a leak before the blast.
A tidal wave has devastated several Dutch East Indian islands south of Achin. The official dispatch reports about 300 deaths on Vana Island and 40 drownings on Cimalu Island. The loss is described as very great.
Chicago jury trial of Cornelius P. Shea ends for today as Judge Ball bars broad testimony and allows only reply questions. Shea was asked one question and permitted to speak only in response. Defense moves to complete its case after the ruling.

An earthquake shock lasting a few seconds was felt in Arkansas City Kansas at 1 46 this morning with no damage reported. Local residents reported the tremor but officials have not confirmed any injuries or structural effects.

A new public office is established in the Brewster house for stenographic work supervised by Mrs BE Moroney of this city.
A through freight from the west collided with a southbound local at Monterey street, wrecking three coal cars aboard the southbound train. Engine No. 899, a heavy locomotive, derailed the cars, with one Chesapeake & Ohio coal car demolished beyond repair. Officials attribute fault to the westbound engineer. no injuries reported among crew as wreckage cleared by 1 pm.
Secretary of State issues license for Freeport Artificial Ice and Cold Storage company with J. A. Billig J. F. Gregory and M. J. McGowan named incorporators. A meeting elected officers and plans construction to begin immediately, aiming for spring operation. F Zallinger of Canton representing Arcticive Machine Co presents bid for plant equipment.
