In a Saturday blizzard six miles southeast of Rockford Illinois two passenger trains Chicago Burlington and Quincy and Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul collided at full speed. Engineer R C Tilden of Rockford was killed and his fireman George Stevenson gravely injured. Burlington conductor Dave Kelley broke an arm and possibly internal injuries. Engineers Frank Ettinger and D T Davis of Rochelle narrowly survived with serious injuries. Burlington conductor J A Chittenden of Chicago suffered a severe head wound. Twenty five Burlington passengers were injured to varying degrees while both engines were destroyed.
Illinois saw more mines active than in 1894 with 507 mines and 29466 workers involved in the miners strike. The wage gains spread, and the average strike duration in Illinois was ninety one days. Northern Illinois near the Rock Island region saw the greatest price gains.
