Train collision kills two engineers at Moline switch yard

Would Kill His Rival in a Street Showdown
Officer Fred Miller arrested Jerry Simpson about 10 o clock Sunday morning for attempting the life of John Grimm. Simpson, who had married Grimm’s ex-wife last Saturday, met Miller on the street and led him to the Grimm home at 120 Chicago street. Inside the house Simpson drew a 32 caliber revolver and aimed at Grimm but Miller tackled him and grabbed the weapon. Simpson was taken to the police station and faces a magistrate after noon.

A P Goddard Dead Prominent Freeport Citizen and Mayor
A P Goddard longtime Freeport resident and leading local businessman died yesterday after a two week pneumonia illness. He helped develop Freeport, built a landmark on Galena street, later ran a sawmill and in 1884 erected Freeport’s first grist mill. He served as a Civil War lieutenant and was brevetted captain for his service.

Longtime Freeport leader dies at 72 in pneumonia
John Goddard a prominent man in Freeport N and Mich counties served as mayor in 1874 to 1877 and as a member of the board of supervisors with the building committee that oversaw the courthouse. A Civil War veteran he ran a roller mill and later directed the Freeport Light Power Co with his son A J Goddard. He died after a battle with pneumonia at age 72 with specialists called in as his condition worsened. He helped develop Freeport from its infancy and his family’s enterprise invested heavily in electric railway improvements. He leaves a widow and three children Frances Smith A J Goddard and Miss Jennie Goddard plus two brothers and a sister.
