Long affidavit defends Lincoln Institution for Feeble Minded Children against charges of abuse and mismanagement. Describes medical care, fire safety upgrades, improved food and laundry operations, staff organization, and educational reforms. Notes trials of inmates, staff dismissals, and ongoing rehabilitation of state facilities.
The text recalls Bobby Burns at Carlisle sharing a convivial wager with three farmers. They each put half a crown for best verse, Burns entering as “Johnny Peep.” His known poem, presented after the contest, ends with Burns being freed by the rhyme.
A humorous clipping notes an eccentric sermon by Lorenzo Dow who performed a “shortest sermon” by climbing a sapling then sliding down while delivering only Hold on there Dow hold on.
