Birmingham Miner Train No 40 derailed after a rail removal at Cahaba bridge. 21 dead, many burned. nine survivors including fireman Sam Spencer. Wrecking train crash adds to toll with three more dead. authorities suspect wrecking gangs.
The railroad lists twenty one killed including James Bolling Guthrie Ky Southern Express messenger and Frank White Birmingham engineer. Others named are A P Connell Helena conductor George Carney Birmingham flagman R Webb Birmingham Bruce Phillips Blocton L L Martin Brookwood Ala Mrs Henry Handbury and two Birmingham children and several Powers and Gardner family members of Blocton plus an unidentified body thought to be Tom Struther. One hundred injured include Henry Handbury Louis ville and Nashville, E Bekels of coccaa, Sam Spencer fireman with arm broken, Andrew Bryson to Blocton fatally, and Miss Booth and Mrs Powers’ child of Blocton. Relief train reached Birmingham at 9 o'clock last night with ten survivors.
