A fragment from the Clarksville Jeffersonian and Madison Journal mocks a “negro meat” Christmas tree idea and contrasts it with a Southern plantation style emblem. It ridicules the notion, lampoons northern and southern figures, and depicts a grotesque imagine of lavishly costed, derogatory ornaments tied to race.
Lake commerce grew vastly in 1855 with Lakey tonnage and US enrollment figures indicating a value surpassing foreign trade. The lake tonnage exceeded $16,000,000, while total commerce near $9540,000,000. Questioning River and Harbor appropriations, commentary asks what Becuanan would think.
In New York City police report an extensive swindle by two men named Hamilton and Saddler operating under the fictitious firm Manchester & Co.
