President nominates Hitchcock from Missouri for Interior

Washington December 21 Special The president has nominated Ethan A Hitchcock of Missouri as secretary of the Interior. Hitchcock is at present ambassador to Russia. Bailey's resolution directing a judiciary committee inquiry into whether members who accepted wartime army commissions forfeited seats was adopted with several named members absent. A bond shipment bill passed and the House adjourned to January 4. Senate private pension bills were passed and reports were read on demand. The foreign relations committee favorably reported a government for the Hawaiian Islands. The cabinet discussed instructions to General Otis at Manila, promising civil rights and continued offices and fair governance to Filipinos. General Merritt arrived to testify, and will command the eastern department at the start of next year, relieving Shafter.

Hobson Arrives in Denver With Reception by Sons of Revolution

Lieutenant Hobson arrived from Kansas City and was greeted by a large Sons of the Revolution committee. He visited Denver institutions including the high school and manual training school, met Governor Adams at the state house, and attended a luncheon and public reception held by the society.

Advance in price of brooms by national manufacturers

In Chicago today the Broom Manufacturers association of the United States met and announced a price rise of twenty five cents a dozen. A further increase is expected in coming weeks as a broom corn shortage tightens supply. Farmers reduced planting due to low prices, amplifying the shortage effect.

Express Collision Near Rahway Kills Porter and Passenger

Eastern and Chicago and New York expresses collided on the Pennsylvania line near Rahway New Jersey today. A colored porter and a passenger were killed and four or five passengers injured.
