Alexandria Illinois reports the death of former Secretary of State W. H. Buck Hinrichsen after a long illness. The longtime public servant, noted for his service in Hlilnets, died December 18. Official tributes follow as details emerge.
Hinrichsen died at his home today after a two year decline. The long illness preceded his death, marking the end of a sustained period of failing health.
The Indiana Auditor of State ordered the Bank of Fowler in Fowler the Citizens' Bank in Ambia and the Goodland Bank in Goodland to close their doors under a law regulating private banks. The banks are owned by Daniel P Baldwin of Logansport a former attorney general and William H Dague of Fowler. Each bank had capital stock of 10000.
Agreement reached between Harriman and Kish interests counsel to postpone the annual meeting of the Illinois Central case from today to tomorrow.
The Jewelers' National Bank in North Atterboro Massachusetts closed after the death of vice president and cashier Frederick Jr Sargeant who was found in a bathtub. The closure follows an examination of bank affairs. The Daily Journal offers home delivery at 1 cent per week.
Governor Charles S. Deneen addressed a large Freeport audience criticizing the Illinois legislature for not passing a primary election law and condemning delays. He defended his administration’s reforms, highlighted civil service gains, tax relief, and financial prudence, and praised officials for improving state finances and public welfare programs.
W. D. Woods head brakeman on the Waterloo to Freeport line was killed at Grant Siding near Galena when caught between drawbars of two cars after signaling to go ahead. He had entered between the cars to cut out a bad order car, then was crushed as the train backed. Woods, about 26, formerly of Waterloo, had recently returned to service and was staying at the Kinne hotel in Freeport. An inquest was planned for today.
The directors of the Pennsylvania company operating lines west of Pittsburg raised the dividend from 6 to 7 percent and declared a semi annual 4 percent dividend. The New York Central declared its regular quarterly dividend of 1 percent.
Alfred H. Smith, vice president of the New York Central, was acquitted of manslaughter charges over the Brewster express wreck at Woodlawn last February in which twenty four people died.
Justice Gould of the district supreme court orders Secretary Cortelyou to show cause why he should not be enjoined from delivering the balance of 21,450,000 Panama Canal bonds to the banks and persons named in his announced allotments.
New Orleans December 18 Associated Press Gus Ringling head of the circus combination died in a New Orleans sanatorium from a complication of diseases. The obituary notes Ringling’s leadership of the Ringling Brothers circus trust and his passing today in the city.
