Pacific Railroad Bill Aims For Westward Rail and Telegraph Network
Washington correspondence reports a forthcoming Pacific Railroad bill in the House. The plan envisions three main routes from Mississippi River south of 30 degrees to San Francisco, from Missouri River north of 40 to San Francisco, and from Lake Superior to Puget Sound. Each route would grant thirty sections per mile, with land drawn from nearby vacant lands, withdrawn from entry, surveyed if needed, and priced at 25 cents per acre, with no title vesting until roads reach completion.
