A New Orleans dispatch reports the EM White burned to the water’s edge near Point Coupes late Monday night. About 35 to 40 passengers perished or disappeared after an quick spread of flames and a catastrophic explosion. Officers and engineers fought the fire, two pilots escaped by leaping into the river, and a superintendent and his wife perished with their child. The casualty list includes many white and colored passengers and crew, with a large cargo of cotton and merchandise lost. The disaster left the steamer and its cargo valued in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and sparked a major relief effort.
