Brigadier General Frederick Funston heads a presidential commission sent to Goldfield Nevada with Charles P Neill and Terbert Knox Smith to investigate miner operator tensions. The group is empowered to inquire freely, with troops constrained to protect law and order and refrain from taking sides.

Cooper says they knew nothing of her intent. She formerly lived in Edinburg and eloped with Stephen Cooper four years ago. The man is 87 years old. She says her family spurned her after Cooper was jailed for larceny. The baby was starving, she claimed, and she drowned it. Police later arrested her.
