Chicago December report on the beef trust cases notes the last pretrial step before the formal trial in federal court. Ten special pleas raised by the packers will be settled by jury trial before action on the indictments returned by the federal grand jury.
A large number of representative fruit growers gather in Champaign for the fiftieth annual convention and semi centennial celebration of the Illinois State Horticultural Society. Proceedings open this evening and continue tomorrow with addresses by horticultural experts from Illinois and neighboring states.
Baseball magnates and managers of the National League gathered at the Victoria hotel in New York for their annual meeting. Talks before the session hinted the agenda would cover winding up the past season and settlements of disputes over players, with no official statement issued.
Centerville Indiana December 12 special report Mr and Mrs Cyrus Albertson and Mr and Mrs John Brooks living near Greensfork united in a double golden wedding today at the Brooks home. Fifty years ago both couples were married in a double wedding and have since lived as neighbors on adjoining farms. Each couple has four children and each family has sustained one death.
Washington December twelve special midshipman Merriweather was sentenced to one year confinement at the naval academy and to a public reprimand by the secretary of the navy. He was acquitted of manslaughter but found guilty of violating naval regulations against midshipmen engaging in fisticuffs.
The Pennsylvania society of New York will commemorate Benjamin Franklin’s bicentennial at its Waldorf Astoria annual dinner tonight. Speakers include Postmaster General Cortelyou General Horace Porter Frederick P. Fish George A Post and Professor Albert H Smyth.
The memory of the late Senator John H. Mitchell was honored today with two and a half hours of lying in state at the city hall followed by funeral services at the First Congregational church.

The Woman's Home Missionary society of the First M. E. Church will host a reception and thanksgiving offering in the church parlor on Wednesday afternoon December 13 from 2 30 to 5 00. The program includes hymns readings and an instrumental duet with Mrs L Burrell Miss Edith Burrell and Mrs Dr Verbeek among participants. All members and friends are invited.
