Coruna Spain Dec 12 Three hundred eighty one people died in the wreck of the Salier, not 274 as first reported, as the vessel carried over one hundred passengers after Bremen departure. Most were steerage passengers, leaving experts to compare the disaster to the Drummond Castle loss near Ushant. Theories attribute the Salier loss to weather, steering gear failure, or a reef strike, with many victims drowned in berths before surfacing.
