Union Pacific sets west speed records with mile a minute runs

Omaha, Neb. December 6 The Union Pacific Railroad reported multiple record runs in one week with speeds up to 70 miles per hour. A 620 mile dash averaged 62.5 mph, a 100 mile leg reached 68.2 mph, and a 261 mile sequence from Sidney to Grand Island averaged 65.6 mph. A special theatrical train from Julesburg to Council Bluffs covered 294 miles in 286 minutes, later adjusted to 275 minutes for just over 63.6 mph after deductions.

Three Die In Detroit Rail Crash At Twenty Five Speed

Detroit December incidents report two suburban cars carrying about twenty passengers collided on the Detroit and Oakland Electric railroad Saturday afternoon. James Mingle was found guilty of first degree murder in Springfield Illinois for killing his former lover Mary Briscoe and her baby Dolly Mingle with a hatchet on July 27, 1897. The jury fixed death, the first scheduled execution in thirty years, with jealousy cited as the motive.

Hermit Life Spinster Makes Unusual Funeral Plans

An elderly woman near Brushy Fork southwest of Newman has lived as a hermit for 48 years and written a will. She ordered that no man preach her funeral sermon or serve as pallbearer, that a woman drive the hearse and women lower and inter the remains. No men may attend the funeral procession.

At 12 15 a m the six day bicycle race began in Madison Square Garden with 36 riders in nine columns. Leaders at 1 a m included Charles W Miller of Chicago on 20 miles 3 laps KK Smith of Saratoga 19 miles 3 laps Fred J Titus of New York 18 miles 2 laps. Hale the Irish champion trailed with 6 miles 5 laps among twelve riders ahead.

Memorial exercises for Henry George held in Chicago

In Chicago on December 6 the Chicago Single Tax club organized memory exercises for the late economist Henry George at the Auditorium drawing more than 7,000 attendees. Mrs. George, widow of George, sat in a box as speakers included Dr Emil G Hirsch ex Governor John P Altgeld Bishop John L Spaulding of Peoria and Rev Dr E S Craig of Toronto Ontario.

Driver Dies After Runaway Team Collision at Franklin

Thomas Bourland, 60, was driving near Franklin Illinois when his team bolted, throwing him from the wagon. He suffered a broken neck in two places. Police reported no other injuries.
