A shop advertises that its line of suits and overcoats is up to date and bought before the tariff. They pledge to sell at old prices while stock lasts and invite customers to call and browse, asserting they can offer better prices than competitors.
Hats in stiff and fedora styles arrive with quality guaranteed. Prices range from 50 cents to 3 dollars with the Guyer hat highlighted at 50 cents. A large selection of neckwear including Puff Scarves Four-in-Hand Tecks Club House bows also featured.
Coal operators in the Pittsburg district plan to restart mines along the Wheeling division of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. Aided by railroads and a hired guard force, they aim to hire imported labor at 69 cents per ton amid warnings of potential violence. About 500 miners could be affected as talks with the 150,000 striking miners proceed.
Columbus Aug 28 President Ratchford of the United Mine Workers issued a statement rebutting Pittsburg district operators. He accuses them of delaying a resolution, building stockades, hiring Pinkerton detectives, and funding armed measures. He says arbitration is acceptable only if based on a living wage and a general, multi state basis. He denies operator funding of miners and asserts broad support for a field wide conference.
Hazelton Pa Aug 28 strike at Van Wyckle Colraine and Beaver Meadow collieries. 2000 idle workers as Hungarian and Italian leaders push wage regrades. English speakers would return to work if equal pay accepted. Miners march to Milnesville and shut down the mills. night meeting pledges support for higher wages while English workers threaten to return.
Pittsburg Aug 28 Miners leaders optimistic about settling the strike in favor of the diggers. District President Dolan reports meetings at Claridge Westmoreland County led to quit orders collapsing two Westmoreland Gas Coal mines. Six central-field mines closed as work suspended. Sheriff Lowry ordered strikers off public roads and an injunction issued to Captain Walker and others. Operators plan to restart after Labor Day and St Louis convention. Riot at Champion mines Robbins Co. as 5600 strikers wives drive off workers. 1000 strikers march and camp nearby awaiting another restart attempt.
Springfield reports disgruntled miners at West Find shaft claim strikers promised to end strike and go to work yesterday but none did. Taylorville miners vote to stay out and march to Decatur with 1,000 expected. Bloomington sees 10 of 250 return to work as leaders push more resignations. Buffalo shop closures hit railway freight. Detroit Pure Food men form National Association of State Dairy and Food Departments urging original packaging laws.
