Coal Operators Move to Open Mines in Pittsburg District

Coal operators in the Pittsburg district plan to restart mines along the Wheeling division of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. Aided by railroads and a hired guard force, they aim to hire imported labor at 69 cents per ton amid warnings of potential violence. About 500 miners could be affected as talks with the 150,000 striking miners proceed.

Ratchford Replies to Pittsburg Operators

Columbus Aug 28 President Ratchford of the United Mine Workers issued a statement rebutting Pittsburg district operators. He accuses them of delaying a resolution, building stockades, hiring Pinkerton detectives, and funding armed measures. He says arbitration is acceptable only if based on a living wage and a general, multi state basis. He denies operator funding of miners and asserts broad support for a field wide conference.

Early Settlement Prospects Grow for Pennsylvania Strike

Pittsburg Aug 28 Miners leaders optimistic about settling the strike in favor of the diggers. District President Dolan reports meetings at Claridge Westmoreland County led to quit orders collapsing two Westmoreland Gas Coal mines. Six central-field mines closed as work suspended. Sheriff Lowry ordered strikers off public roads and an injunction issued to Captain Walker and others. Operators plan to restart after Labor Day and St Louis convention. Riot at Champion mines Robbins Co. as 5600 strikers wives drive off workers. 1000 strikers march and camp nearby awaiting another restart attempt.
