Chicago August 22 Special report notes generally fair weather tonight and Wednesday with local thunderstorms likely. Warm conditions continue with increasing southerly winds across the state.
Avaustra Me August 22 Special reports Thomas B Reed resigns his seat as congressman from the first district. The resignation is accepted and will take effect September 4. Reed has represented the district since taking office. Immediate successors and reactions are not provided in the brief notice.
The resignation was received by the governor and accepted today, with the effective date set for September 4. This marks the end of the official term for the outgoing official as the governor formalizes the transition.

United States District Attorney Solomon Hicks Bethea fell ill while visiting his Dixon area farm six miles from the city. He endured side pain and vomiting, was cared for at Nachusa house, improved after a week of treatment, and is now out of danger and hopeful to return to his Chicago office soon.
James Francis a prominent farmer from four miles west of Belvi ers Ill was fatally injured when a vicious bull struck him from behind breaking his neck. He died hours later with only his daughter Reno Russell as a close survivor. Two years earlier Reno Russell had been jailed after beating Francis with an iron bar but was acquitted on self defense.
In Aurora Illinois on August 21 nearly two tons of dead fish were found in the Fox river between Geneva and Batavia. Officials blame refuse from Geneva's glucose factory for the poisoning prompting fishermen to demand action. Separately three conventions in Omaha Nebraska indicate ex Governor Holcomb may be nominated supreme judge by Democrats Populists and Silver Republicans.
Butter offerings totaled 102 pounds all sold at 7 1/2 cents. Official market active at 2 cents. Last week price 20 1/2 cents and 3 months ago 18 cents.
Arrangements for the coming fair at Taylor's park on September 12 and 15 are near completion. The management offers liberal premiums, expert judges, and a strong race program for farmer boys. Music features include Monroe Military Band, Rupert's European Novelty acts, Signor DuFore cannon act, comedy bicyclist Paul Orlag, Walrose globe act, Ray Burton shooting and wire act, plus Hamlin's Concert Company providing daily free concerts. Other attractions will be added to ensure wide amusement.
Three tramps riding a Chicago and Great Western freight train shot and wounded Brakeman J. E. Wilson of Marshaltown and Couey Mathews of Des Moines after being ordered off. The trio was then thrown under a moving train. the bodies were mangled. An armed posse pursued the murderers, who escaped.

Mayor Baumgarten dismissed Fireman Clancy for lack of duty and Patrol Driver Washer for disgraceful conduct last Friday. Washer pleaded for reinstatement and a new trial, with a possible 30 day delay before a decision.

Mrs Margaret Mary Fry widow of the late Hon CG J Fry died at 2 oclock this afternoon at her home on upper Stephenson Street. A native of Pennsylvania she came to Freeport with her husband in 1857 and remained beloved by many. An earnest Church of Christ Scientist member, her life focused on family and humanity. Survived by nine children, her husband having died two years ago at Christmas.

Local folks plan short vacations, and farm life is marked by a looming end to grain threshing as smoke from a steam thrashing engine fills the air.
