Chicago August 19 President Small of the telegraphers union orders a complete cable strike before business opens. He notes Helen Gould is targeted as a stockholder while calls for a closed shop grow. Seventeen brokers sign the pact with ten yet to sign as the fight escalates.
General Superintendent Cook described 61 new operators hired on Saturday while seven remained available, noting the strike order has not split the workforce. He disputed union president Sagall’s claims and questioned the cost figures cited in annual reports, asserting higher costs and continuing gains as more operators return to work.
Denver August 1 Judge Riddle granted a restraining order on the application of Otty and Hough brokerage firm. The order forbids Fred Wessel president of the telegraphers union and A. G. Adams secretary of the union from further actions related to the dispute.
An industrial dispute arose when operators in the Logan & Bryan office formed a strike. The order compelled these workers to take market reports furnished by Logan & Bryan to Otis & Hough. Subsequently the men employed by Logan & Bryan resigned en masse.
A Wisconsin informant claims International Paper plans a nationwide print paper merger. He says Wisconsin Minnesota and Michigan mills will join the new company with options on most plants. The move could give International Paper control of the U S print paper market within a year and push prices higher for jobbers and small buyers.
Burlington Iowa region endures two days of cyclones and floods that cripple telegraph and telephone lines. Widespread damage includes washed out crops and landslides blocking the St Louis Keokuk and Northwestern line south of Burlington. Damage estimated near 100000 within a 100 mile radius as weather remains threatening.
At 14 miles below St. Louis a fast Iron Mountain passenger train from Little Rock derailed and overturned its mail car. Engineer Aaron Platt was killed and the fireman injured. Platt had planned to attend the funeral of his friend, Engineer Robert Johnson, who died in an engine boiler explosion on the same route last Thursday night.
Alexander Jester, who was indicted tried and acquitted years ago for the murder of William Gates, dies at his sister’s home near Shawnee Oklahoma Territory. John W. Gates pursued Jester for thirty years, ending with the long hunt.

Bloomington Aug 19 A wealthy Bloomington youth Albert Buescherfled Denver after a sudden marriage to Mrs Emery White a widow and Kipling relation. Reports say he drank too much at Nortoni s dinner and disappeared. His wife Mrs Buescher travels Bloomington seeking clues while relatives doubt her claim. She stays at Hills hotel and vows to locate him.
Milka Bere, a Russian immigrant, was jailed for bigamy after marrying Michael Tarbuck who claimed she could marry a gun in this country. Tarbuck fled after an $80 lawsuit from Paul Tamasovich. Bere pleaded ignorance of the law and remains in jail.
Washington reports bubonic plague breaking out in San Francisco with five cases and four deaths. The first notice came from the Marine Hospital Service describing three initial cases and death within two blocks of Chinatown. Surgeon Austin was directed to coordinate with authorities and report eradication measures as two foci were found and action begun.
Washington August 9 Taft begins a world encircling journey to Manila for the opening of its first legislative assembly He will start from Columbus Ohio tonight delivering a notable speech He is accompanied by General Bell and Chief Clerk Schofield The secretary plans to return in December Mrs Taft and son Charles will join in Yellowstone Park for the journey
In Plymouth England on August 12 Robert A Pinkerton head of Pinkerton's Detective Agency died aboard the North German Lloyd steamer Bremen after fatty degeneration of the heart. He aged 61 and was born in Dundee Scotland educated at Notre Dame University. Allan Pinkerton founder of the agency was his father. Also cited is Emma Leach sister of the Younger brothers who died from injuries in a Kansas City streetcar wreck at age 14 last Friday.
In Quiouonte Falls on August 14 Fred Schiller, son of Gottried Schiller, a local framer, was dragged by a horse he was leading. The horse’s tether wrapped around the father's head and tore it from his body.
Ex treasury secretary Leslie M. Shaw urges calm over financial and industrial conditions in an interview. He notes farms output exceeds 6.2 billion, mines 1.5 billion, forests 1 billion, factories 12 billion in non food goods, railways 2 billion, payrolls about 5.5 billion, and wage scales undiminished. He warns fear is psychological, not economic, and calls for confidence to prevent retreat of investment and industry.
New York August 19 The stock market fell further with many securities hitting multi year lows. Liquidation profits erased and shares vulnerable amid fears of tighter corporate controls by Congress and state legislatures rising money rates and reduced credit. Weak trade signals and lack of international aid add to outlook. Telegraphers strike and Pope Manufacturing receivership worsen sentiment.
A violent distant quake was recorded at the observatory in Laibach Saturday night starting at 6:38 and lasting fifty minutes. Seismologists estimated the quake originated about 5,600 miles away from Laibach.
Aug 1 report: Frank Reynolds, a paroled convict from Karion, tried to flee after an arrest attempt. Henry Claussen of the First Cavalry National Guard was inspecting his revolver when it fired, killing him instantly after a brief duty with his troop at Camp Lincoln Springfield. The incident followed a weeklong guard assignment.

Janesville Wisconsin August 10 Dr Mickelsohn a woman practitioner living near Clinton died in mysterious circumstances after being summoned to a country case. She went to hitch up her horses at the barn and was seized with violent illness and died in great agony before other physicians could reach her.
