A mid summer sale promotes ladies' umbrellas shirts and vests at far reduced prices. The ad touts Swiss embroidery bonnets, lawn and percale fabrics, and mens socks with bold discounts, urging shoppers to compare prices and claim money back if found equal elsewhere.
The Windward reports a near encounter between Dr. Nansen and Jackson as Nansen, with two chronometers failing, wandered toward Spitzbergen. Jackson guides Nansen to Elmwood after a fortuitous meeting near Cape Flora, noting Nansen’s wintering hut close by and misled position due to map errors.
The Chronicle prints Nansen's self told account from London dated Aug 16. He describes the drift north with rapid cooling and a record low of 62 below zero. He notes health aboard, Fram’s depth measurements, and discovery of warmer saline water beneath ice. He credits windmill light, predicts Fram’s high latitude, and praises Captain Sverdrup while joining Johansen for exploration. MapRID, Aug. 15. A naval committee has been sent to England authorized to acquire an ironclad and a cruiser.
A Polish quarry foreman George Bowaskowski struck Morley on the head with a shovel during a strike after Morley refused work. Morley fell into water and was held underwater until quarry workers rescued him. Bowaskowski fled but was arrested without resistance.
A Chicago note reports a man’s death by suicide in a note reading I have committed death by own action because I could find no work. General Wheat telegraphed from Denver that Fort Huachuca troops are pursuing Yaqui Indians who attacked Nogales in Mexico. Another detachment from Fort Grant is in the field chasing Indians crossing the Arizona line to raid American ranches and then crossing back into Mexico.
The twenty four hour outlook from yesterday’s post shows Indiana and Illinois fair weather with possible local thunderstorms in the north, warmer temperatures, and southerly winds. Lower Michigan expects generally fair skies with possible southern storms, warmer in the east, light to fresh southerly winds. Upper Michigan to have fair weather with light to fresh westerly winds. Wisconsin generally fair with light to fresh southwesterly winds and warmer in the south. Iowa fair weather with variable winds.
