Ohio Populists repudiated fusion with Democrats and nominated Jacob Coxey for governor at the state convention. Turbulent scenes followed as anti fusionists captured leadership while a bribery charge tied to Mark Hanna sparked a tense debate. Witnesses described payments and letters involving Charles Dick.
A convention erupted in a melee when a delegate tried to pull Witt from the chair. Police intervened as chairs flew and a blue coat guarded each aisle until order was restored and adjournment reached. Temporary officers were made permanent, and a standing committee was named to investigate floor corruption charges. The afternoon session nominated Jacob Coxey for governor and Morris Whitcomb for lieutenant governor.
Charles M. Clifford murdered his wife Musetta Clifford 14 and killed himself with a revolver in their Rush street rooms at 302 Rush street. The couple’s daughter woke at 6 30 to find both parents dead and the room bloodied after a struggle.
Milwaukee Aug 12 Part of the Illinois Steel company plant was attached by the sheriff to satisfy a 60 539 debt in favor of Newport Mining. The suit stems from unpaid amounts for iron ore delivered by the plaintiffs under two contracts totaling 96 716 for 35 000 tons and 195 000 for 50 000 tons. The sheriff holds nonoperating assets. operations reportedly continue.
Chicago reports yesterday's baseball results from Cincinnati St Louis and other games with several leagues listed. In the Glass Manufacturers Conference at the Auditorium no agreement was reached as unions push for a 25 percent wage increase while manufacturers offer 15 percent, with 10 percent in concessions sought.
Alderman William Mangler must pay a $1000 fine and serve ninety days in county jail after refusing to disclose the name of the prominent man who tried to buy his vote on the General Electric ordinance. Judge Dunne made the ruling. Mangler had said he had been tempted by a briber but would not talk to the grand jury.
A Figaro dispatch from San Sebastian reports that during police questioning the assassin Golli stated that it would be President Faure's turn next. He indicated this intention in the course of the examination.
General Bradley pushes toward Coffeen under guard as Mayor Tray lor forbids entry until Bradley renounces command. A miners strike spreads from Decatur to nearby towns with proclamations, deputized sheriffs, and calls for order amid plant closings.
Parkersburg West Virginia August 12 The injunction granted to Monongah Coal and Coke company has been misunderstood due to omitted qualifying terms unlawful and upon the property The order restrains interference with mine management and prohibits entry on company property while labor leaders may travel elsewhere in the state
Pittsburg Aug 12 The Spring Will mine workers at Dempster Boyd Co have earned 9 cents since July 16. Ninety nine men work there and 200 mine wagons are filled daily for Pennsylvania RR tenders. Strikers plan to pull miners out and cokers assist for profit. District UM W A headquarters appeal for aid exceeds $1000 in two days as provisions are sent to starving families along Turtle Creek and Monongahela valleys. A big labor meeting is planned in McKeesport Saturday with Gompers Ratchford Garland. a parade will precede it. The Plum Creek mine shows 285 workers but only 65 wagons left with a half day output far below the 685 wageuns.
Ishpeming Michigan August 12 The Mine Workers union leaders report many non members joining to avoid a strike. Membership is expected to grow beyond earlier projections within two weeks. Businessmen from both cities quietly urge workers to join.
In Columbus on August 12 a high authority for the Associated Press states there will be no strike in sympathy with the miners. If the current plan cannot win, the incident will be considered closed by labor organizations for the time being.
The miners executive board reports 7,187 people in need of food in local mining camps. The largest distribution to date has not exceeded seven cents per person.
Marinette Wisconsin August 12 arrangements have nearly completed whereby this season s cut of the Spalding Lumber company at Cedar river goes to the John O'Brien Lumber company of Chicago The amount will be fully 20000600 feet and the consideration is in the neighborhood of 200000 or more
