Springfield Aug 10 Professors Helmly Freeman and Butler met state examiners to pass candidates for five year and state certificates. Seventy candidates were tested in twenty four studies across Springfield Freeport East St Louis Effingham Galesburg Normal and Chicago. Board expects to finish in about ten days with unanimous recommendations issuing certificates by Supt Inglis.
Minnie Blough of Davis Junction files a $5,000 breach of promise suit in Rockford Ill against George M Bennett son of W W Bennett landowner and capitalist. She claims his singing of DeKoven Oh Promise Me constituted a marriage proposal while Bennett says no proposal was made and they only played violin and piano together.
Frank Bingaman, the Polo highwayman, was brought to Oregon for a hearing before Justice Frank E. Reed after he allegedly held up Oregon boys returning from a ball game. The judge bound him over to the grand jury on two assault with intent to kill charges and one robbery, with bonds totaling $500.
A severe storm with a fierce electrical display hit Rockford and nearby farms. The State Street Baptist church was struck and damaged, barns and livestock burned, houses roofs were demolished, and several families were rendered unconscious by bolts. Murray Hill bank, among New York City's oldest institutions, suspended operations during a pending examination. The bank reportedly holds deposits around one and a quarter million dollars and is believed to be able to pay in full. It was said the suspension followed actions to take real estate for loans.
Special. Train Dispatcher Pond and O Friesner of the Toledo and Ohio railroad were arrested on manslaughter charges for causing the wreck that night. Engineer Quillison and Fireman St. Clair will probably die.

August Linder longtime Freeport resident and city sexton died at 3:40 AM at his State street home after a prolonged illness from typhoid. Funeral plans pending with Rev Theodore Alberding to conduct services likely Thursday from his house.
