On a Northwestern train from St Paul an old man with his granddaughter recalled the Barnum & Bailey show in which camels impressed the girl. The circus arrives in Freeport on August 11 with twenty camels including Siberian varieties, plus other rare animals like giraffes and yaks in the menagerie.
The board of review received pamphlets from W. H. Stead attorney general detailing the assessable property of banks corporations and private citizens. A complete list of property exempt from taxation is included in the pamphlet.
A fierce Aug 9 storm unleashed fifty mile per hour winds and enormous hail in Peoria and Knox counties. It devastated 24,000 acres of corn, smashed barns, downed wires, and damaged homes, with damage estimates near 1 million dollars. Lightning killed a 10 year old girl in Mason City and two men in Pana, while an interurban railway system suffered fifteen hours of service disruption.
A. Votan company stave and hoop factory burned in Mount Carmel on Aug 9, causing a $30,000 loss with no insurance. Fire began at 10:30 p m in the dust room and, despite two night watchmen and the fire department, the plant was ruined. Two cars of finished stock valued at 850 and two empty railroad cars burned. The large frame plant owned by A Wotan and M P McDaniels employed about 100 workers may not be rebuilt.
An aged white man was attacked by a black man sparking street clashes that drove most blacks from Hillshore. C. J. Pry, a labor contractor, sought protection for his workers but failed. He left for St. Louis to recruit new laborers, warning further violence if Negro labor returns amid rising anti Negro tension.
In Chicago two women, one his wife and the other a former spouse, knelt at the bedside of M. McDonald in St Anthony de Padua hospital begging for forgiveness. They wept and kissed the old man’s hat as he lay dying, their repentance dated but unanswered. A severe hail storm then swept the city with heavy rain and large hail causing damage to crops and two miles of pine cover.
A man named Patah Maris, age TL, location Ange, fell from a streetcar in the city. Wits reportedly left him as the methowell KO wore off, leaving bystanders to assist until aid arrived.
Governor Vardaman endorses Williams as United States Senator from Mississippi. He sent a message to the Democratic state central committee stating the party has chosen Mr Williams and accepted the tribunal’s action without resentment or regret.
In Helena Montana on August 9 Judge Rach in district court issued a writ of mandamus ordering Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone Co to rename operations. The judge held the company must perform its duties and restore service or forfeit its franchise, noting costs did not excuse failure to operate. He said the company could obtain needed help if offered satisfactory pay.
United Mine Workers district No 19 members and officers at Montlake are restrained from pressuring workers or interfering with Montlake Coal Company's business. Four dead and three seriously injured in a head on collision near Dalton on the Western and Atlantic railroad. Victims include Engineer J L Heggie and Fireman John Roach. Other injured include G F Colbert Tom Battenfield and B Killibrew.
In Moscow on an undisclosed date police searched the imperial technical schools and uncovered a central laboratory for making new pattern bombs and powerful explosives. Regular shipments were found to interior points. Authorities seized bombs, 600 time fuse devices, a typography setup, and forbidden literature, arresting twenty students, both men and women.
Lincoln recorded over two inches of rain with a fierce electrical display as a major wind storm swept eastern and southern Nebraska. Fremont suffered power outages after electric light wires were blown down, plunging the city into darkness. Irving Park saw extensive tree damage from the winds.
