The largest and cheapest store in the state offers fruits in season by the quart can or load. A Cumberland Mid disturbance reports a catastrophic accident at 6 40 PM Saturday at the Hellman coal shaft. Twenty five men were said to be trapped and twenty two found suffocated in the upper slope. Rescuers recovered some asphyxiated workers, with several in critical condition. Ventilation failure from the engine’s smoke caused the disaster. Morris White freed a door to allow a fresh air rush, otherwise more lives would have been lost. Insurance values were not disclosed.
Arkansas and New Mexico towns erupt as Cutting receives one year hard labor and a $000 fine for publishing a libel in an American newspaper about Mexican citizens. Consul Brigham and Judge clash over the sentence while fears grow of Mexican American conflict. Secretary Bayard says no new developments and stresses U S sovereignty in such trials.
A merchant George Greene and his daughter with an engineer left Morrisburgh park in a small steam launch for Lachine. They lost bearings, hit a submerged pier near the Canadian Pacific bridge, and were swept toward rapids. The daughter, a strong swimmer, saved her father from drowning, then nearly exhausted, reached shore. Both were saved. Baseball standings note Detroit and Chicago progress and American schedule follows.
