The provisional national committee of gold standard Democrats met at the Commercial club in Indianapolis on August 7 with Bynum presiding. Delegates from 30 states debated venue, selected Indianapolis as the convention site, and Palmer was chosen for the national committee chair. A nine member executive committee was named to lead the campaign ahead of the September 2 convention.
The convention assembled with visitors filling the room as Senator John M. Palmer received an ovation. General Bragg was delayed by a washout. Palmer was chosen unanimously as chairman. Indiana and Ohio leaders were named to key posts while a call to Democrats urged adherence to party principles and denounced Chicago's actions.
In Cleveland era discussions the committee and informal talks cheer President Cleveland figures. Delegates from Kentucky Ohio Indiana and Illinois favor Carlisle for president with Buckner as possible VP if not nominated. Palmer seen as potential president while Indiana Polis backs funds and opposes city venues with prior national conventions. Party to be named National Democratic with Populist Democratic label for Chicago adherents.
Albany Aug 8 Senator Hill arrived home for ten days and will not attend or preside at the Bryan and Sewall notification meeting at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday. Authorities say he has made no recent policy statements and will not speak until the September 16 state convention.
Jones said he had no doubt Senator Hill would be all right but saw no significance in a World report linking Hill to Bryan, noting the New York meeting context remains unclear.
Cleveland August 8 Major C F Dick Colonel Haskell and Hon M A Hanns will depart for Chicago on Sunday and from there the campaign will be directed exclusively from the eastern end with western headquarters handling local matters.
