About 250 representatives of leading Cleveland business houses signed resolutions denouncing the boycott at a Saturday meeting. In Pittsburgh on August 7, Chicago and Philadelphia reports say the American Glass Company leaders dismiss the Indiana sales threat as unconstitutional. Coal company halts Nanticoke mines over worker strike

Wilkesbarre Pa Aug 7 The Susquehanna Coal company at Nanticoke Saturday shut down its collieries until such time as its 1500 employees decide to return to work The company ordered larger cars to be loaded but the men refused to obey the order prompting the work stoppage.

Havana reports the release from custody of L L Sloane who was arrested on arrival in New York on a robbery charge at Havana authorities request. The decision cites no extradition treaty between the United States and Cuba, astonishing Hawaii lawyers and General Ludlow the military governor. The case is minor but could presage future issues.

Wisconsin State Turnfest Opens With Parade and Exhibits

The Wisconsin state turnfest in Mayville drew about 3,000 visitors. Exhibitions ran from 9 to 12 in the forenoon at the park. A parade from Turner Hall to Wiegler's park occurred at 1 PM with turning exercises again at the park. Evening events included Turner Hall entertainment, prize turning events, a park picnic with five brass bands, and the summer nights festival and dance.

Rev. John He Campii, pastor of the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran church at the Atlantic mine near Houghton Michigan, is missing after collecting about 500 dollars for a new church. He left a wife and six children penniless. A penitent letter from Duluth said he was unworthy and asked Providence to care for his family, but no cash was enclosed.

Treasury to Resume Issue of Gold Certificates

Washington Aug 7. The secretary of the treasury has ordered resuming the issue of gold certificates as in former practice. Assistant treasurers will receive gold coin when offered and deliver gold certificates in exchange upon demand in the denominations the depositor requests.

Death Toll Rises In Stratford Streetcar Disaster

Terrible wreck on the Stratford extension of the Shelton Street Railway company kills thirty-one, with eight injured. A loaded trolley car jumps a trestle near Oronoque, 440 feet long, drops forty feet, overturns, and sinks. Conductor John Carroll perishes. motorman Hamilton escapes by jumping. Dozens are identified among the dead and seriously injured.

Four miners fall 300 feet in shaft at Quincey mine

In Houghton Michigan on August 7 four unnamed miners were repairing timbering on the forty-ninth level when the unanchored ladder failed. They plunged 300 feet. one died instantly, two were fatally injured, and the fourth was badly hurt.

Ruth Swartz Murdered by Mother Then Drowned Self

In Canton Ohio on August 6 Ruth Swartz aged 16 was slain by her mother Catherine Wise who then walked 2.5 miles to an abandoned quarry and threw herself into a water pool. Neighbors retrieved the mother's body later that afternoon. An investigation by the county coroner found the daughter slain after an act of frenzied violence following a troubled relationship.
