The C O D D Store advertises as the state’s largest and cheapest grocery shop offering seasonal fruits by the quart or carload. Melons arrive weekly from growers, apples by the peck barrel or carload, coffee roasted in house, sugars bought by the carload, various fish, canned goods, candies and nuts, guitars and other items, with free delivery across the city.
Samuel J Tilden died at Greystone Wednesday morning after a long illness. He suffered from an acute gastric illness and heart trouble, fading after a final decline as doctors attended him. Born February 9 1814 in New Lebanon New York he rose to prominence as a lawyer reformer and Democrat leader championing anti-Tweed efforts before serving as governor. Across Washington New York Chicago and other cities leaders mourned the statesman acknowledging his honesty reform and influence while noting his retirement from politics in later years.
The death of Samuel J. Tilden triggers shock across Indiana and other states. Governors and party leaders issue condolences, announce public proclamations and half mast observances. Prominent newspapers hail Tilden as a great figure while plans for a Gramercy library trust are outlined.
Workers at J H Hardy Co packing house and Anglo American Packing and Provision Co halted work after being told of a nine hour pay for eight hour shift. About 400 men at Hardy Co walked out with only a few returning. Packaged firms plan to push similar wage scales across their large labor force.
A call was made for a September national meeting in Indianapolis by Knights of Labor Grangers and others to form a new political party prioritizing labor rights. The boon back party fears dissolution if a new party forms.
United States legislators debated the surplus revolution with the focus on gold reserves and the redemption of greenbacks. Allison asserted a $100,000,000 gold dedication, while others questioned its effect on debt, taxation, and treasury spending as the Senate approved the joint resolution amid urgent fiscal discussion.
The President reviewed the river and harbor and sundry civil bills and gave overall attention to post-session matters. He approved the deficiency measures late in the day and examined the river and harbor bill, with fate of the measures uncertain. Congress members plan to stay in session. adjournment looks likely Thursday afternoon. A surplus resolution action is awaited Wednesday night, and fortification funds may be deferred to December. The conference committee met without progress, reporting disagreement.
