Death of Samuel J Tilden at Greystone Mansion
Samuel J Tilden died at Greystone Wednesday morning after a long illness. He suffered from an acute gastric illness and heart trouble, fading after a final decline as doctors attended him. Born February 9 1814 in New Lebanon New York he rose to prominence as a lawyer reformer and Democrat leader championing anti-Tweed efforts before serving as governor. Across Washington New York Chicago and other cities leaders mourned the statesman acknowledging his honesty reform and influence while noting his retirement from politics in later years.
