Panegyric and Protest at Confederate monument ceremony

Jefferson Davis defended the Southern cause at a Alabama ceremony laying the Confederate monument cornerstone in Montgomery. Ex-Governor Watts presided as Davis lauded Confederate valor, warned against reconciliation, and urged citizens to honor the past while serving the present and future. The event included tributes to Gen Gordon, a public address, and a procession with veterans and a special train to Atlanta.

Protest Meeting in Albany Denounces Davis Speech

Eight-Hour Demand Shakes Chicago Milwaukee Rail Lines

Chicago and Milwaukee employes petitioned for an eight hour day with ten hour pay, presenting 150 signatures to the company. Northwestern officials rejected the demand, threatening a continuation of current hours or a strike. Milwaukee Strike Shuts Down Mills for Eight Hour Demand

The John Py & Co packing works in Milwaukee closed with about 900 workers out, following Knights of Labor organizing and demands for eight hours at ten, amid widespread factory shutdowns. Several hundred other mill workers also unemployed as unions push for shorter hours nationwide. Smaller demonstrations planned in New York, Baltimore, and Toledo as eight hour laws loom.
