A deadly clash in East St Louis ends with multiple dead and wounded as deputy sheriffs on the Cahokia Bridge fire into a panicked crowd of strikers. Mayor Joyce intervenes, deputies are arrested, a mob surrounds the L&N yard, and Knights of Labor leaders appeal for order while authorities seek militia.
Special officer A G Hewlett led a nine man party to the Our Courts station and later the Louisville & Nashville yard. Deputies claim rocks struck two officers and they returned fire on a bridge near Mayor Joyce who resisted arrest and drew his revolver. A blaze followed as fires started in Vandalia and Louisville & Nashville yards with several engines lost and authorities unable to halt the incendiaries.
April dispatches report Governor Oglesby selecting multiple companies from Decatur Champaign Greenville Nashville Nashville and Sparta to march toward Gouin with 12 000 rounds of ammo sent ahead. Col M Smith takes command in Barkley’s absence while Gatling gun detail led by Lieut Kimber prepares for front operations.
In a crowded hall Chamberlain challenged Gladstone over land purchase proposals and Irish policy. He urged a peace inquiry and warned the plan would burden British taxpayers, while Gladstone defended government measures and Party divisions deepened. Arbor Day proclaimed in Ohio as Sullivan and Irish leaders weigh the reforms.
