Man Still Lives In Tree After Election Bet For Decades
Hulitt Hazewell of Windham County Connecticut continues to inhabit a chestnut tree he built after predicting Grant would win the 1868 election. The tree house, three tiny apartments, and a ground ladder overlook a forested yard where he feeds birds and squirrels. In 1888 a lightning strike killed several pets, toppled limbs, and left Hazewell briefly unconscious before he rebuilt a shelter and buried the pets in a granite-marked grave near the tree.

In Hazle township the application for a five mill levy to cover the indebtedness faced opposition. Meanwhile Joseph Hover, kidnapped in 1884, reunited with his mother in Shamokin after a long separation and a tale of abduction in Nebraska and Jamestown.
