Flood Devastation Across Pennsylvania From Recent Rains
Floods sweeping from the New York line to Philadelphia and from Easton to Pittsburgh caused extensive damage across Pennsylvania. Rivers rose to record levels, washing away bridges and railroad tracks, flooding towns, and wrecking mines and factories. In Luzerne County Wilkes-Barre and nearby towns suffered severe inundation with several deaths and major bridge losses. Scranton reported multiple fatalities and White Haven saw two railroad workers drown near a washed Lehigh Valley bridge. Rail lines suffered widespread damage, with limited service as lines reopened gradually. Miners faced water inflow, some collieries halted, and repairs slated within a week pending rail restoration. A drowning occurred when a Slavonian girl washed from a bridge in Derringer, with no body recovered. Freeland’s trout dam on Hayes creek withstood the flood, a rare bright note amid widespread destruction.

A four act rural Yankee comedy titled Si Plunkard will be performed this evening at the Grand Opera House.
