At noon yesterday Menno W. Lutz, 28, a South Allentown resident, told his wife he planned to kill himself then went upstairs. She raised an alarm and, with neighbors, found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot within the hour. The motive remained a mystery.
Nearly 80 000 copies of the Pennsylvania laws will be circulated to miners this month in eight languages Polish Slav ish Lithuanian Russian German Magyar and Italian. Translator Louis N Hammerling from Plymouth born in Honolulu educated in Warsaw and Paris prepared uniform translations. Hammerling left mining for linguistics and will broaden access to legal texts for non English speakers. The article also recalls New Year revelries at Krells hall with a grand march led by Bernard J McFadden and Miss Margaret McFadden, drawing the largest ballroom crowd in Freeland history.

The Plymouth borough smallpox record for New Year’s day lists three victims, David Roberts, Mrs. Richard Bevan, and Jobo Lishefski. Lishefski, about 19, has vesicular symptoms for eight days and spread risks rise as no physician saw him until Tuesday. Several house residents work in mines, and three inmates sought vaccination after exposure, highlighting concern over unreported cases and potential further spread.
Jonathan Roberts, about 65, a former resident of the Second ward, died at his Wanamie home Tuesday afternoon from pneumonia. The body arrived this morning. services will be held tomorrow at 2 PM, conducted by Rev. O. G. Langford, with burial at Freeland cemetery.
