Priests Advise Miners in Shamokin Strike Caution
Clergymen in the Shamokin region urged parishioners to avoid sympathy strikes against Nanticoke workers. Rev. Joseph Koch warned that strikes harm both workers and the community, urging arbitration and peaceful means. The move appears to quell the looming walkout as United Mine Workers officials postpone Friday’s sub-district meeting while awaiting broader settlement efforts. A proposed new coal road faces questions about feasibility and impact on freight rates, with officials noting it may take at least two years and could require heavy funding.
