Sixty Dollar Bill Exemplar From 1778 Noted In Spokane Chronicle

A rare sixty dollar paper bill from the Continental Congress era, issued in 1778, is described in the Spokane Chronicle. The specimen, heavy greenish paper about 4 by 3 4 inches, bears a receipt promising sixty Spanish milled dollars, with a back bow and arrow design. The note, possibly signed by an authority figure, was linked to George Washington by some but questioned by others. Owned by Otto Fiechtl, the relic gained notoriety after its 1886 Charleston earthquake finding and 1893 Washington review, concluding legal status but never returned to the treasury. It has drawn offers well above its face value, yet remains with its Spokane owner who refused a $1,000 bid.
