The Interstate Commerce Commission will file proceedings against coal railroads for illegal restraint of trade. Commissioners meet in New York next Tuesday to hear testimony, aiming to establish evidence of an illegal combination. A broader push follows the Northern Securities decision, with a formal suit likely after securing witness testimony from railroad officials. Crescents defeated Mahanoy Plane 11 to 9 in a Wednesday night basketball game. Referee Hartman oversaw the contest as the Crescents led 8 to 0 at halftime before the visitors rallied in the second half to close the gap. The final score remained 11 to 9 in favor of the Crescents.
The senate considered a bill paying school directors 82 per day for attendance plus 3 cents mileage. Senator Patton of Clearfield amended to strike out the per diem provision. Patton has supported measures benefiting the county directors association.
The floor opposed a bill to make school director posts paid offices arguing it would expense districts over 60 000 in funds. Senator Patton had an amendment removing per diem payments to directors for county association meetings during institute week. Directors’ privilege cited. teachers’ minimum salary already set at 35 dollars. The amendment passed.
Commissions for the February elected justices of the peace and aldermen reached Wilkesbarre from Harrisburg. In Foster township M. P. Campbell, Frank Snyder, P. K. Fallon, and Frank Thomas will receive commissions, paying $6 and taking an oath at the recorder’s office. Isaac G. Eckert was not issued a commission due to residency rules. A governor appointment can fill the Foster vacancy since Campbell is the district’s only justice.
An order by Coxe Bros. & Co places all workers on the same coal pricing. Previously non-employes paid 3.25 at the breaker and 4.00 delivered. now domestic pea coal at the breaker costs 3.25 and chestnut 4.25, with delivered pea coal 4.25 and chestnut 5.25.
Prominent Freeland businessmen launched a effort to reorganize the Board of Trade or form a similar body to advance town welfare. The promoters report growing support and expect to set a date for a public meeting within days. A Board of Trade could help secure a new trolley line linking Freeland with White Haven, St. Johns, and intervening communities.
The Crescent Athletic Association and members with their ladies plan the first annual banquet and ball tonight at Krell's ball followed by a banquet at the Hotel Osborne. Sylvester Kralitisus and Ursulia Mitrecavicz of town plan to marry May 2 at St Kasimer's church. John White of Highland and Annie Boyle of Hazleton to wed next month. Albert E. Smith and Hulda Seiwell of Jeddo to marry soon.
A Wilkesbarre attorney reports the Strike Commission lawyers’ pay. Clarence S. Darrow would receive 15000 dollars, new figures show. Wilkesbarre attorneys Murphy Lenahan 3500 each, Shea 2500 each, Hazleton's McCarthy 1500, Brumm and Kearney 1000 each. Non union representatives Lenahan OBrien to get 25000. Unclear if operators’ counsel earn more than usual salaries.
James E. Roderick of Hazleton is named by Governor Pennypacker to head the renamed Department of Mines elevating the bureau to a department. He moves from chief of the bureau to head the department with a salary rise from 3500 to 4000 annually for a four year term. Basketball tomorrow Crescents versus Villa Nova at Krell's hall proceeds to aid local players.
