A Luzerne county court refused to confirm county jail appointments by the Republican controlled Prison Board prompting internal party strife. The board nominated the same officials after a court ruling limited its authority to nominate only with court approval. The old officials will stay in place as GOP divisions widen. Separately, William Gallagher of Tamaqua, a former Drifton resident, was jailed on aggravated assault and battery charges stemming from a strike era incident. Bail was set at 500 dollars as prosecutors named Max Keslich as the complainant.
Ludwig Brandmier died Friday afternoon at his Allentown home aged 67 after a period of illness. An early Foster township settler, he moved to Pond Creek in 1854, well before coal was known to exist nearby. The area was a wilderness at that time, though he helped establish it.
Public notice claims a cold cure with Laxative Bromo Quinine Tablets sold by druggists. Each box bears E. W. Grove's signature and promises a refund if it fails to cure, priced at 25 cents.
Mr Brandmier built a large farm through hard work and perseverance and later prospected coal on his property finding paying deposits. He and his wife moved to Allentown. Survived by wife and children Fred Pond Creek John Cementon Mrs Susan Smith Demonton and Mrs Elizabeth Mills Pond Creek. Remains arrive White Haven 10 24 am tomorrow via Jersey Central Railroad. Services at St Pauls Evangelical Lutheran church followed by interment at White Haven cemetery.
The Lehigh Valley Railroad division announces a new timetable taking effect today. Freeland sees six arrivals and five departures, with several trains removed and one new train at 8 40 a m to White Haven linking to a fast main line to New York and Philadelphia. The shift ends the prior mail train pattern, reducing trips to three trains to the county seat and three to the Schuylkill region, affecting local business.
Easton locomotive fireman John Wilkins saved 3 year old Helen Pastik from a Lehigh Valley train near Pittston as it approached at forty miles an hour. Wilkins reached the child with one hand on the engine pilot and plucked her from the rail.
Probate notice states Augustus Donop of 4 Freel is deceased and has left testamentary to Amelia Donop. Creditors are urged to pay and claimants to present demands. Otton Stroh serves as attorney for the estate.
Scranton's North End Stars beat the Crescents 15 to 6 in a rough contest. Stars led 8-2 in the second half after adjustments as Crescents struggled with offense and fouls. Key players included T. McCloskey and Nowak with multiple field goals, while referee Cope oversaw the game amid an on-court incident.
The legislature passes a bill limiting press freedom and allowing damages for offended readers. Luzerne votes show 3 Democrats for, others absent. Republican Drury and Rep Holcomb Hartman for, Burke Flanagan against. Tribune may be exempt as tri weekly. Governor Pennypacker expected to sign after upcoming objections period.
In Hanover township drill men quit after determining a rich coal deposit in Wyoming district. Eight unopened veins located and twelve veins in use found thick and high quality. Estimated total coal around 300 million tons across 2000 acres south of Wilkes Barre. Land owned by Lehigh and Wilkesbarre Company on north and Delaware Lackawanna and Western on south. Jeddo Progressive Club hosted large crowd at Grand Opera House. Minnesota's Best flour sold by A Oswald.
